Bee-LT Sandwich

A bee recipe?  Why not, bees are delicious, especially as larvae.  Girl Meets Bug has an awesome bee recipe, this one is from her recipe list.  Bee larvae make the perfect bacon substitution in your good old fashioned BLT.  Bee larvae are not yet for sale as a commercially produced food product, but this will likely change in the future as we expand our edible insect pallets.  Canned wasp larvae by substitute well and can sometimes be found in specialty Asian markets.   I have spoken with several bee removal services that have offered to let me keep larvae not used for honey production, but bee weary:  hives destined for professional removal have often already been sprayed with some sort of nasty pesticide.  The safest bet would be to contact your local bee keeper to see if they have extra drones to purge, often in the fall.

  1. Sautee the bee larvae in the butter, with a tiny bit of salt and a few drops of honey.
  2. Once larvae become golden brown and crispy-looking, remove, and mix into enough egg white to cover and bind them into a mass.
  3. Then return them to the sautee butter, pressing them together into a patty.
  4. Toast bread, and slice tomato. Spread mayonnaise on toasted bread when ready. When bee patty becomes firm, place it atop the lettuce and tomato on the sandwich.
  5. Enjoy!
