Welcome to your online culinary hub for edible insect recipes, product reviews, events and much more. Edible insects are one of the most sustainable forms of proteins on the face of the earth with a culinary potential that we are only beginning to explore. Bug Vivant is here to make gourmet edible insects more accessible to the Western world. _
We are learning that insects are the key ingredient to a future of nutritious and sustainable food access. However, promotion of global food security via edible insects is hindered by a negative Western attitude toward insects. Our negative attitudes are a product of ignorance and one dimensional view of bugs as pests. Not only are insects a sustainable form of protein, but they’re also a unique ingredient with a massively underestimated culinary potential. Incorporating edible insects into Western diets will require not only the raw materials, but also an understanding of how to craft a fine meal from such an unfamiliar ingredient.
MISSION – EDIBLE INSECTS CULINARY HUB
Bug Vivant LLC was founded in July of 2014 to make gourmet edible insects more accessible to the Western world. Though public interest in edible insects is growing, edible insect resources are scattered across the web. BV provides a culinary hub for this growing community, connecting curious foodies and insect experts alike. We make cooking with insects approachable and enjoyable and supply you the information you need to embrace a whole new world of culinary flavors and textures.
HOW BV GETS BUGS ON THE MENU
We need bug if we’re going to get them on the menu. Food grade crickets and mealworms are becoming easier to find. However, with over 2000 species of known edible insects, this is just the tip of the icebug. To close this gap, we will begin farming waxworms in the fall of 2015 and are always available to help you source other uncommon edible insects.
It can be difficult cooking anything for the first time, let alone a whole new taxonomic branch of life. Bug Vivant is a collaborative hub for the exploration of edible insect cooking. Working with progressive chefs we review and share a variety of healthy, nutritious, and delicious edible insect recipes. Edible insect recipes can be submitted by entomologists, chefs, and especially you! Do you have a favorite meal worm cookie or grasshopper taco recipe? Share it with our entomophagy community, check out our easy to use recipe submission form.
In such a new market, it can be difficult to determine what, where and how to buy edible insect products. Check out our product review page for up-to-date information about new edible insect products hitting the shelves in North America and Europe. What is safe, where does it come from and will the quality be good?
FOUNDER: MEGHAN CURRY
You never know where you’ll end up. After countless hours behind a microscope, during the second year of my master’s in Entomology I found myself wholly unable to focus. My mind was haunted with a wild idea: edible insects. This idea rooted while preparing for an academic debate about global nutritious and sustainable food sources. The same points echoed through every publication I read, “Edible insect potential in Western diet is huge, but insect supply and information is very limited.” At that moment I decided that I wanted to help open the American diet to edible insects by starting a business. One year later, I founded Bug Vivant.
Can you taste the revolution?
